How to Report a Fake Google Review: Step-by-Step Guide 2026

Victim of a fake Google review? Follow our step-by-step guide to report and remove fraudulent reviews and protect your business reputation.

April 30, 2026·7 min read·by L'équipe Ma Belle Note

Fake Google reviews are a serious problem for local businesses. According to some industry studies, up to 20% of online reviews may be fraudulent — posted by malicious competitors, bots, or people who have never set foot in your establishment. The stakes are real: losing just one star on your Google rating can cost you between 5% and 9% of your revenue, according to Harvard Business Review research.

The good news is that recourse exists. This guide walks you through detecting and reporting fake Google reviews step by step, and tells you what to do if Google declines to remove them.

How to Recognize a Fake Google Review

Before reporting a review, you need to be reasonably sure it is actually fraudulent. Here are the five most reliable warning signals.

Profile with no photo and no review history. A Google account created very recently, with no profile photo, and with only one review posted — yours — is a strong red flag. Real customers typically have an account with a few other reviews and some visible activity.

Very generic review with no specific details. "Very bad service, avoid at all costs" with no mention of what actually happened is characteristic of a fraudulent review. A genuinely dissatisfied customer will usually mention a concrete detail: a specific dish, a date, a staff member, a particular product or service.

Suspicious timing. Negative reviews that arrive right after a known conflict — a dispute with a former employee, a commercial disagreement, a strike period — or that are concentrated within a very short window of time, deserve close attention.

Coordinated attack: multiple negative reviews at once. Receiving three to ten negative reviews within the space of a few hours, all from similar-looking profiles (recently created accounts, little history), is the classic sign of an organized attack, often orchestrated by a competitor.

Review written in a foreign language for an entirely local business. A review in Russian, Mandarin, or Arabic posted on a neighborhood hair salon that serves only local clients is clearly incoherent. It does not automatically mean a fake review, but combined with other signals, it is a serious indicator.

Steps to Report a Fake Google Review

Via Google Maps (from your mobile)

  1. Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone.
  2. Search for your business and open your listing.
  3. Scroll down to the "Reviews" section.
  4. Locate the review you want to report.
  5. Tap the three vertical dots to the right of the review.
  6. Select "Report review."
  7. Choose the reason for reporting: "Spam or fake," "Off topic," "Conflict of interest," "Offensive or inappropriate content," or "Privacy concern."
  8. Confirm. Google will acknowledge that your report has been received.

Via Google Business Profile (from desktop)

  1. Sign in to business.google.com with the account that owns your listing.
  2. Select your business from the list.
  3. In the left menu, click "Reviews."
  4. Find the review you want to report.
  5. Click the three dots to the right of the review.
  6. Click "Report review."
  7. Select the most appropriate violation category.
  8. Submit the report.

For coordinated attacks involving multiple fake reviews at once, you can also use the bulk reporting form available in the Google Business Profile help center. It is strongly recommended that you document each fraudulent review with screenshots before reporting them.

What Happens After You Report?

Google processes reports within an average of 3 to 5 business days, sometimes longer. During this time, the review remains visible on your listing — this is frustrating, but it is the normal part of the process.

If Google removes the review, you will receive a notification and the review will disappear from your listing. Your rating is automatically recalculated.

If Google declines to remove the review, this does not necessarily mean the review is legitimate. Google applies strict criteria based on policy violations, and a review can be fraudulent without technically breaking those rules. In that case, several options are available.

Contact Google Business Profile support directly, either through the help form in your dashboard, or through the Twitter/X account @GoogleSmallBiz, which sometimes provides faster access to a human support agent. Explain precisely why you believe the review is fraudulent and include supporting evidence: screenshots of the profile, comparisons with similar reports, proof that the alleged customer never appeared in your booking system or point-of-sale records.

If Google Refuses to Remove the Review: Your Options

Respond publicly to the review

Even if you cannot get the review removed, you always have the option to respond publicly. A professional and factual response — "We do not recognize the situation described and have no record of this visit" — shows future customers that you are actively contesting the review. A discerning reader will draw their own conclusions.

Avoid aggressive or emotional responses at all costs: they do more damage than the review itself.

Legal recourse

A fake review may constitute commercial defamation under applicable law. If the attack is serious and well-documented, several legal options exist:

  • Filing a complaint with the relevant consumer protection authority for unfair commercial practices online.
  • An emergency injunction before a commercial court to obtain urgent removal.
  • A court order requiring identification of the author, which compels Google to disclose account information in response to a judicial order.

These avenues are expensive and slow. They are reserved for the most serious situations, particularly well-documented coordinated attacks.

Counterbalance with positive reviews

The most effective short-term strategy is to mobilize your satisfied customers to leave new positive reviews. An influx of genuine 5-star reviews mechanically dilutes the impact of fake negative ones on your overall rating.

Ma Belle Note simplifies review collection with QR codes, SMS and email collection links, and a tracking dashboard.

Prevention: the Best Remedy

The best protection against fake reviews is a strong overall rating backed by a high volume of authentic reviews. A business with 200 reviews at 4.6 stars will withstand an attack of 5 fake negative reviews far better than one with only 15 reviews.

Ma Belle Note's anti-fake review solution monitors suspicious patterns on your listing in real time: questionable profiles, unusual timing, coordinated waves. You are alerted immediately, allowing you to act before damage accumulates.

FAQ

Does Google always remove reported reviews?

No. Google examines each report and only removes reviews that clearly violate its policies (spam, hateful content, proven conflict of interest). Negative reviews from genuinely unhappy customers, even unfair ones, are generally not removed. This is why it is important to act on multiple fronts: reporting + public response + collecting positive reviews.

How long does it take to remove a fake Google review?

Google indicates a processing time of several business days for reports. In practice, it can take anywhere from 3 days to several weeks. If your first report is rejected, you can appeal or contact Google Business Profile support directly.

Can you sue the author of a fake review?

Yes, a fake review can constitute commercial defamation, which is subject to civil action. Some business owners have obtained damages. It requires identifying the author (through a court order) and proving the fraudulent nature of the review. This is a lengthy and costly process, reserved for the most serious cases.

Can a competitor post fake negative reviews about my business?

Unfortunately, yes. This practice is called "review bombing" and affects many local businesses. It violates both Google's policies and applicable law. Document everything, report to Google, and if the attack appears coordinated, consult a lawyer specializing in digital law.

When facing fake reviews, passivity is your worst enemy. Report quickly, respond publicly, and build a sufficient volume of authentic reviews to make any attack ineffective.
